Ancient Tomb Full of Gold Treasure and Victims Found in Panama | Trending
At an archaeological site in Panama, researchers discovered the tomb of an ancient ruler full of gold treasures and sacrifices. The tomb, estimated to be 1,200 years old, marked the burial site of an elite chieftain along with dozens of other individuals who “died to accompany him into the afterlife,” according to a news release from Panama’s Ministry of Culture.
According to the press release, researchers discovered five pectoral muscles, two belts made of spherical gold beads, four bracelets, two human figure earrings (a man and a woman) and an earring in the shape of a double crocodile. They also found a necklace made of tiny round beads, five gold-plated earrings with sperm whale teeth, two bells, bracelets and skirts made of dog teeth, and a set of bone flutes. Linette Montenegro, national director of cultural heritage at the Ministry of Culture, said in the press release that the results had “not only economic value, but also incalculable historical and cultural value.”
The head of the El Caño Foundation and project manager, Dr. Julia Mayo, clarified that this collection may have belonged to a high-ranking adult male from the Rio chiefdom (a form of government). He clarified that the excavation excavations are still ongoing and it is not yet known how many people were buried with him. However, it turned out that he was buried face down on a woman’s body, as was the custom in her community.
Mayo explained: “This discovery is important, among other things, because it represents a very special type of burial that we know as multiple burials and simultaneous burials, and we call them that because they consist of burials of different numbers of people (between 8 and 8) passed and 32 people). The same grave of high-ranking people buried alongside others previously sacrificed as companions.
