Everything you need to know about treasure chests in Stardew Valley
While exploring the world of Stardew ValleyPlayers will encounter many different secrets and fun surprises that they might not expect. One of the more valuable things a player can collect is a Treasure Chest, a package of useful items worth 5,000 gold when sold.
These treasure chests can be found in various locations, but their main location is water. If you fish, you have a 15 percent chance of catching a treasure chest when you cast your line. Since this catch is unique compared to the catch of other fish, it is important to understand them.

Updated March 28, 2024 by Christina Roffe: With the new version 1.6 update in Stardew Valley, players now have the opportunity to improve their mastery stats and unlock new rewards. These include golden treasure chests, an improved version of the regular treasure chests that you can find in the water. We’ve updated this article to include information about golden treasure chests, including how to unlock them, where to get them, and some of the possible items you can find inside. We’ve also updated the possible rewards from regular treasure chests to include new items introduced in the last update.
How to catch a treasure chest
Players can catch a treasure chest in any body of water where they can fish. Certain fishing rod attachments have a 15% chance of increasing the potential of obtaining a treasure chest. Catching a fish will reveal a treasure chest icon to players during the fishing mini-game. If players move the green bar over the symbol, they can catch the treasure. However, at the same time they also have to catch the fish they want to catch. Otherwise the treasure will not be obtained.
What’s in a treasure chest?
When successfully fishing out a treasure chest, players don’t know exactly what’s inside. The chance of finding just one item is 60 percent, but chests have a chance of containing multiple items: 24 percent for two items, 10 percent for three items, and six percent for four or more items.
Which items appear in the chest depends on a few factors, including the player’s fishing level, the distance at which they cast their line, and their progress in finding artifacts. The list of articles includes:

Other places to find treasure
While fishing is the main way to find treasure, there are two other methods to get a chest. The first is to find artifact finds. There are many ways to obtain these, including by digging them up at artifact locations on Ginger Island, purchasing them from the Desert Merchant for 5 Omni-Geodes, finding them in level 3 Supply Crates at Beach Farm, and from Haunted Skulls after the Vault Bundle is dropped is finished. These finds may contain a chest. Another option is to use Secret Note #16 to find a chest buried where the X is marked on the note.
